English
English at Brauer College builds students' abilities to read, write, speak, and think critically to help young people develop the knowledge and skills needed for education, training and the workplace. At Brauer we explicitly teach using The Writing Revolution, Victorian Lesson Plans and are collaborative members of the Wimmera South West Literacy Learning Community.
English is a compulsory study from Years 7 to 12. Through the junior years, students undertake a wide range of units designed to ensure students have multiple opportunities to build skills such as being able to articulate and examine complex ideas and issues; provide well-considered reasons for their viewpoints; understand how language changes with context, purpose, audience and content; and acknowledge how textual interpretations and understanding can differ based on cultural, social, and personal factors.
These skills are further refined and developed during the senior years, where students undertake either VCE English or VCE Vocational Major Literacy. Students also have the opportunity to study VCE Literature.
Humanities
In Humanities, students focus on becoming active and informed citizens and consumers. Across our disciplines from Years 7-10 students use core knowledge, concepts & evidence to come to important conclusions about the legal, social, business and geographic world. We analyse this through the key skills of cause & effect, perspective & significance so that students have a deep understanding of the world around them. Students take a core Humanities subject from year 7 – 10 which covers the four domains of History, Economics & Business, Civics & Citizenship and Geography.
The core History curriculum covers ancient Australia and ancient European civilisations all the way through the industrial revolution, world wars, and into modern rights movements. In Economics & Business, students become informed about their own financial decisions, their consumption, the workforce, and strategies business use to succeed. Students explore our legal system and political structures in Civics & Citizenship, as well as consider the relationship between humans and their surrounds in Geography.
Students have the choice to go further if they have a particular interest, in our history, business and legal themed electives from Years 8 - 10.
At VCE level, we offer History (Modern History into Revolutions), Business Management, Accounting and Legal Studies.
Technology
Technology at Brauer College provides students with engaging, hands-on learning from Year 7 through to senior secondary studies. Students begin with practical experiences in Woodwork, Food Technology, Textiles and ICT, developing creativity, confidence and problem-solving skills that continue to grow throughout their schooling.
As students progress, they can choose from a wide range of Technology subjects including Woodwork, Metal Fabrication, Textiles, Food Technology and Digital Technologies. In senior years, students can access VCE Technology subjects as well as VET Building & Construction, VET Engineering and VET Cookery as part of their VCE or VCE Vocational Major (VCE VM) pathways, supporting strong transitions into further study, training and employment.
Students learn in exceptional specialist facilities, including multiple woodworking workshops, metal fabrication and engineering workshops, textiles and digital technologies spaces, cooking classrooms and commercial kitchen facilities. Hospitality students also benefit from access to a commercial coffee machine and barista equipment. All Technology areas are well resourced with industry-standard tools and equipment, ensuring students work with contemporary resources that reflect current industry practice.
Many teachers bring industry experience into the classroom, helping students connect their learning to real-world careers, apprenticeships, traineeships, TAFE and university pathways. Brauer College is proud to be the largest provider of VET Delivered to Secondary Students (VETDSS) programs in Southwest Victoria, offering strong, practical pathways for the future.
LOTE-Japanese
The Japanese curriculum at Brauer College emphasises communication and culture. Students develop their abilities across the key language skills of listening, speaking, reading, viewing, and writing throughout the year levels in Japanese.
In Year 7, students learn to read the Japanese hiragana script and use it to write sentences describing themselves. They also learn appropriate Japanese greetings and functional everyday language. In Year 8, students consolidate their prior language knowledge while learning to talk about their family and friends. They also explore Japanese culture through food and festivals, with a particular focus on the lives of teenagers in Japan.
Year 9 Japanese offers students the opportunity to deepen their language skills as they explore daily routines, school life, and descriptions of people and places. From Year 10, students have the opportunity to visit Japan and experience the language and culture firsthand.
Studying Japanese broadens students’ horizons, not only by developing their ability to use Japanese as a language, but also by enhancing their global perspectives and intercultural understanding.
Brauer College also provides students with the opportunity to continue Japanese at VCE level.
